A key conceptual device for the explication of perception and the categorization of EGO. The content of consciousness has this structure: EGO interprets reception as an aspect of an external object, from the perspective of a subject.
Is this immediate or mediated? That is a misleading question. The reception is immediate and the aspect-object-subject structure is mediated. Much of the vocabulary, e.g. Frege sense, Locke's idea attempts to fit a complex structure into a single word. Instead of idea we have a compex of recept-aspect-object-subject. The structure of corroboration, recursive, mediation.
Perception is a mechanism that interprets recepts (sense-data, received sensory input) as aspects of objects from a subjective perspective. The "object" is a cognitive construction--a conjecture. But it is a conjecture constructed for the purpose of corroboration with respect to to mind-independent reality. The subject, however, is not a recept, nor is it an object. It is an interpretive framework in which recepts, aspects, and objects are treated as salient.
So aspect-object-subject is the structural foundation of the fundamental theorem of EGO: MDNMIW. Reception purports to be an aspect of an object from this subjective vantage.
What we have is neither direct nor indirect realism. But asymmetric realism. or Aspectual Realism. We see an aspect of reality. The subject and object are attached to the aspect. Further hypothesis. The error is thinking of the subject as pre-existing, and the "idea", "representation", "form", sense-data is presented to the subject. No. The organism exists, it sorts the sense data, and the subject and object are interpretive notions attached to the aspect. The sense-data is sorted into a subject-aspect-object representation.
