George F R Ellis. There is no wave function for the entire universe. There are only local, incommensurate wave functions that decohere when they interact.
- The World Soul in Plato's Timaeus, ψυχὴ τοῦ κόσμου (psychē tou kosmou). In the Timaeus, the demiurge creates the world soul. A famous line describes the cosmos as: ζῷον ἔμψυχον ἔννουν (zōion empsychon ennoun) meaning roughly: “a living creature endowed with soul and intelligence.”
- Plotinus treated the World Soul as an emanation from the One, linking intellect and material reality. The key expression in the Enneads is: ἡ τοῦ παντὸς ψυχή (hē tou pantos psychē) meaning: “the Soul of the All”. For Plotinus, the World Soul is not the highest principle. His metaphysical hierarchy is: The One (to hen) , Nous (Intellect), Soul (psychē), Nature/material world (physis)
- Renaissance thinkers like Giordano Bruno revived the concept in a more pantheistic form.
- Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, reframed it historically and logically: reality is the self-development of Spirit (Geist), coming to consciousness through finite minds and institutions.
- F H Bradley connected solipsistic partial abstractions to a more comprehensive reality he called the Absolute.
- For Royce, The World
- Both Royce's and Bradley's version is anti-anthropomorphic, anti-individualist. Royce's is social and ethical.
- For Quine, the answer to what exists is simple "everything".
