Definition

A describable regularity of the universe. Higher-level phenomena strictly obey lower-level laws, **but instantiate additional lawful regularities that are not derivable in any tractable or explanatory way from the lower level alone**. A rule (a law of nature) is a conceptualized, articulated, grammaticalized pattern.

There is a key distinction between the law of induction. The law of induction says the future will be like the past. But the key point is that we can sort situations by the degree to which they are repetitive (like the past). The future is like the past in some ways and unlike the past in others.

This overlaps with Plato's notion of "eidos/form". And with Aristotle's notion of "morph" in hylomorphism. And with the general idea of information. Information is a pattern detected in data. Information is supervenient data. But the same information can be conveyed by multiple data variations. This is similar to the idea of a proposition being the "meaning" of a sentence. See Russell and Hume on induction. The foundational pattern is occasional conjunction. Modeled with causal chains, or with equations, or with statistical probability.
