Definition

Language allows us to quantify over non-existent objects; the parameter is just the grammaticalization of possibility. Another simple thing that philosophy has made confusing. We didn't have to wait for Aristotle. A dog runs. Which dog runs. These are parameterized words. "I", "you", "he", "she", "it".

Number is a syntax and a grammar for ordering situations. The presupposition is that there are things potentially orderable. What a number "represents" is the possibility of detecting and indicating a thing and then doing it again--sniffing out new things to indicate and tracking the distinction between the already encountered and the truly new. Number is indication, aggregation, suspension in the most general conception.
